A Clean-Looking Washroom Is Not Enough

Workplace washrooms are high-use shared areas with repeated contact across taps, flush controls, door handles, dispensers, cubicles, basins and other surfaces.

A good washroom-cleaning programme therefore needs more than a quick wipe at the end of the day. The tasks, cleaning method and frequency need to match how the facility is actually used.

Feathers Cleaning and Hygiene provides commercial washroom cleaning and hygiene support in Port Elizabeth and Gqeberha, with requirements incorporated into a defined written scope.

What a Washroom Hygiene Scope Can Include

The exact tasks and frequencies depend on the premises, occupancy and operating hours.

Toilets & Urinals

Cleaning of sanitary fixtures according to the agreed washroom routine.

Basins & Taps

Cleaning of basins, taps and surrounding accessible surfaces.

High-Touch Points

Door handles, flush controls and other frequently handled surfaces according to the hygiene scope.

Mirrors

Cleaning of accessible mirrors and surrounding areas.

Floors

Routine floor cleaning with attention to edges, corners and areas around fixtures.

Dispensers

Accessible soap, paper and hand-drying dispensers can be cleaned and checked.

General Bins

General washroom waste bins can be emptied and cleaned where included in the scope.

Periodic Detail Cleaning

Floors, grout, edges and difficult areas can receive more detailed periodic attention.

Cleaning Frequency Should Follow Usage

A washroom used by ten people does not have the same cleaning requirement as one serving a busy office, public facility or high-footfall commercial site.

Headcount

More users generally mean fixtures, floors, touchpoints and consumables need more frequent attention.

Visitor Traffic

Customer-facing or public washrooms may need a different frequency from staff-only facilities.

Operating Hours

Sites operating long hours may require checks or cleaning cycles during the working day rather than only before or after business.

Hygiene Method

Cleaning and Disinfection Are Not the Same Step

Where disinfection forms part of the agreed hygiene scope, it must be approached as a defined process rather than simply spraying a product and immediately wiping it away.

The surface needs to be appropriately cleaned and the disinfectant used according to its intended application and required contact time.

This is particularly relevant for frequent hand-contact points such as flush controls, taps, cubicle handles, door handles and dispensers.

A Defined Touchpoint Routine

Identify frequently handled surfaces
Assign a specific cleaning frequency
Use products according to their instructions
Record the task where the contract requires evidence

Consumables Are Part of the Washroom Experience

A clean washroom still fails its users if soap, toilet paper or hand-drying supplies have run out.

Where included in the cleaning scope, Feathers can check agreed dispensers and replenish available consumables or report shortages according to the client's arrangement.

The responsibility for purchasing, storing and replenishing each consumable should be made clear in the written scope so that neither the client nor the cleaning team assumes the other party is handling it.

Recurring Odour

Fragrance Is Not an Odour Investigation

If a washroom smells again shortly after proper cleaning, applying more fragrance may simply cover the symptom.

Persistent odour can be associated with cleaning issues, but it can also point to drains, grout, ventilation, plumbing or another maintenance problem.

Our role is to deal with the cleaning component and flag likely maintenance issues where cleaning alone is not resolving the problem.

Our guide explains why persistent odour can point to a dry drain trap, ventilation problem, damaged grout or another physical cause.

Important Service Boundary

Sanitary-Bin Disposal Is a Separate Specialist Service

Feathers does not currently operate a sanitary-bin servicing or disposal service.

Where sanitary bins are required at a workplace, their supply, servicing and waste route should be assigned to an appropriate specialist provider and clearly identified separately from Feathers' washroom-cleaning responsibilities.

Build the Hygiene Programme Around a Written Scope

Commercial hygiene works better when everyone knows what is cleaned, how often it is cleaned and who is responsible.

1

Define the Facilities

Number and location of washrooms, toilets, basins and related areas.

2

Define the Tasks

Agree the actual cleaning, hygiene and consumables-related responsibilities.

3

Set Frequencies

Match cleaning cycles to traffic, operating hours and facility use.

4

Confirm Responsibility

Make responsibilities for consumables, waste streams and maintenance issues explicit.

Washroom & Hygiene Questions

What does your washroom hygiene service cover?

The agreed scope can include toilets, urinals, basins, taps, mirrors, floors, high-touch surfaces, accessible dispensers, general bins, consumables checks and periodic deeper cleaning.

How often should workplace washrooms be cleaned?

It depends on usage. Employee numbers, visitors, operating hours and actual traffic should determine the frequency rather than applying the same schedule to every building.

Can you investigate recurring bathroom odour?

Yes, from a cleaning perspective. If the likely cause is a drain, extractor fan, plumbing, damaged grout or another maintenance issue, we would rather flag that than repeatedly apply a cleaning treatment that cannot fix the underlying problem.

Do you check washroom consumables?

Consumables checks can be included in the agreed scope. Replenishment depends on the arrangement for supplying and storing the consumables at the premises.

Do you provide sanitary-bin disposal?

No. Feathers does not currently operate a sanitary-bin servicing or disposal service. This should be assigned separately to an appropriate specialist provider.

How do I request commercial hygiene services?

Submit your premises, washroom requirements and preferred service frequency through our commercial enquiry form. We can then define the tasks and responsibilities in a written scope.

Need a Better-Defined Washroom Hygiene Programme?

Tell us about the premises, number of washrooms, operating hours and current cleaning requirements. We can use that information to define an appropriate commercial cleaning scope.
